Clock-face Timetables

Timetables are very easy to understand when departures are, for example, every 30 minutes from the Town Centre.  Even without looking at the timetable it’s very easy to work out when buses are due throughout the day as departures are evenly split at 00 and 30 minutes past the hour.   This type of headway is known as clock-face.

Clearly the presentation of the timetable is made simple if a headway is clock-face, i.e. it can be divided into 60 which results in trip times occurring at even intervals and at the same times past each hour.  Clock-face headways are

  • 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7½ (8/7), 10, 12, 15, 20, 30 and 60 minutes.

The following is an example of a 7½ (8/7) minute headway:
